Ken Mueller (tall guy) was kind enough to craft some great trophies in his wood shop again this year for the Chill Out so if you see Ken at the awards dinner be sure to give him a ‘Hi Five’. We all helped sand and varnish, but that’s a fraction of the real work involved.Read more...
Say what you will about groms (always under foot, clogging up the beach and surf, etc.), but they are our future and we love to see them in the club. Whether it’s at the Family picnic, the menehune event at the Big Chill Out or at our monthly meeting, they’re a welcome addition and a constant reminder that surfing is something special that should be shared. The April Club meeting featured two presentations by some of our younger members and their love of the ocean was crystal clear.
Sascha, a P-town based second grader, received a special accommodation from the Club for her essay on Oceans. Sascha waxed poetic on the special characteristics of the ocean and why Big Blue means so much to her. On behalf of the club, Izzy Szczepaniak presented Sascha with a certificate and one week tuition for …Read more...
By special permission from Fox Studios, Lynn Adams and the Pacifica Beach Coalition presented “Chasing Mavericks”, a surf movie about Santa Cruz surfing icon, Jay Moriarity and Frosty Hesson, his mentor. It was a sold out evening at the Mildred Owen Concert Hall, Sanchez Center, Pacifica last Saturday night.
One of the film’s producers lead a panel of Mavericks surfing stars along with Frosty Hesson, including current Mavericks Big Wave Contest champ, Grant “Twiggy” Baker, 2012 Mavericks winner Peter Mel, Mavericks founder Jeff Clark and Mavericks veteran contestant and film maker, Grant Washburn. All either surfed Mavericks as extras or played a role in the filming of the movie. We were entertained by their anecdotes around the adventure that went into the making of “Chasing Mavericks”.
Frosty Hesson talked about the philosophy of “Live Like Jay”. It was a thoroughly enjoyable night to remember.
Our president, Greg Cochran, played a large role …
Members of the Pedro Point Surf Club volunteered their time on Sunday June 2nd at Ride-A-Wave (RAW) to help give kids with special needs the chance to feel the thrill of riding a wave and experience a safe, fun-filled day at the beach. For many they say this is one of the best days of their life (!) and not just a special day for the campers, but also for all the volunteers.
Those helping out from our club that day included Izzy Szczepaniak, Greg and Karen Cochran, Sarah Bucini-Lewkowitz, Christina Climer, Myles Kleinfeld and me – Lisa Ryner. We volunteered our time to be beach buddies, surfing assistants, workers at the food table, helpers to divvy out the wetsuits, helmets and life preservers to the kids, as well as participants in the set-up and take-down of the equipment, tents and sand …Read more...
Saturday, May 12, 2012, Cowell’s Beach, Santa Cruz
Under partly cloudy skies, 35 children and young adults with special needs gathered at Cowell’s Beach for a day with the Ride-A-Wave founder Danny Cortazzo and his spirited staff of volunteers to participate in surfing, kayaking, boogie boarding and have a fun day on the beach.
This year my son Brennan had the opportunity to be a participant. We met the “check-in staff” at the Cowell’s Beach parking lot at 8:30AM, took care of paperwork and were assigned his “beach buddy” Lisa Ryner (PPSC member). A “beach buddy” is a volunteer who stays with the participant the whole time making sure his or her special needs are met, that they have an opportunity to participate in all the water activities if they want to, give them some encouragement if they need it, and just have …Read more...
Please join us at the south parking lot, Linda Mar Beach, in a memorial paddle out this Sunday, Jan. 29, at 2pm for long time Pacifica resident and Linda Mar surfer Jimmy Doran, who passed away Jan. 4 after a brief illness.
Jim came to Pacifica in 1973 and lived almost his whole life there. He was well known at Linda Mar Beach since he loved to surf. He got a skim board when he was very young and used to ride it along the surf’s edge. Later he learned to surf, and it became the love of his life.
About 20 years ago, he went to Costa Rica with a group of surfers. Costa Rica became his second love. He would travel there almost every November to surf and hang out with friends he had made there.
Jim also liked to …Read more...
We’ve been losing far too many friends in surfing in the past couple of years, it seems. Those who were well known in the Linda Mar surfing community are often honored with a paddle out at Pacifica State Beach, Linda Mar. Since PPSC is the collective face of the Linda Mar surfing community, the club is host to this tradition of surf lore locally. This tradition in remembering the passing of surfing friends has caught the attention of the local media and a segment on the paddle out of Sky Parsons aired recently. Take a look below.Read more...
