Oceanside Contest was a blast
PPSC sent a team to Oceanside to surf in the Oceanside Longboard Contest the weekend of August 13-15. The expectations were high for warmer water, sunny days and good surf. Well the good surf expectation was met. In this unusually cool summer the California coast from San Diego to Crescent City has seen more fog and cool days than anyone can remember. The fog persisted throughout the weekend with temperatures ranging from the mid-fifties to the mid-sixties. The water was a balmy 57 degrees. But the waves were glassy and ranging from 2-4 feet.
The PPSC Team consisted of 14 surfers. Asi Ghiassi, Stefanie Phillips, Karen Cochran and Krista Howell surfed in the Sr. Womens division. Asi and Karen advanced to the semi’s but just missed making the finals. Michelle Simpson surfed in the menehune division finishing fourth in her heat and missed advancing to the finals. There were three pro gals in her heat. Brianne Sampson finished third in the finals, the highest finish for a PPSCer.
Ryan Devine (Sr. Mens) surfed in the Sr. mens division on Saturday and the Noseriding competition and Pro longboard contest on Friday. He advanced in the noseriding competition but didn’t in his other two divisions. Dave Rodriquez and Greg Hall surfed in the Grand Masters division but didn’t advance. Ron Drews was our sole entry in the Masters division. He surfed well earning a fourth in his division but he fell one spot short of advancing. Gil Garcia was our Stand-Up Paddleboard entry. He too surfed well but also finished fourth.
In the Legends division we fielded 4 surfers, Greg Cochran, Bill Newlin, Rick Loeper and Izzy Szczepaniak. Greg, Rick and Bill just missed advancing to the semis. Izzy won his heat and advanced to the finals where he finished fifth.
Greg Cochran also surfed in the President’s division and finished fourth out of eight. As a team PPSC finished 7th. A good showing for our small team. We all had a great time down there and are planning on going back next year. We are looking to field a bigger team. Keep the date open folks.
