PPSC takes 3rd at Santa Cruz Memorial Day Club Invitational
The Club sent a team of 19 riders to Santa Cruz over the Memorial Day weekend to take part in the 27th Annual Santa Cruz Longboard Union’s Memorial Day Weekend Club Invitational held at Steamers Lane. PPSC made a strong showing finishing 3rd out of 13 teams including Swamis, Malibu and Oceanside.
Unlike the last 3 years the weather was beautiful. It was the first day of summer-like weather with warm sunny skies and just a slight breeze late in the afternoon. The waves were a steady waist to head high with some larger sets sneaking in on the contestants.
PPSC had 4 women surf into the finals in 5 divisions. Michelle Simpson, the youngest PPSC team rider at 12 yrs old, surfed in the Novice Division and finished second. Beth O’Rourke and Sarah Gerhardt surfed in the Sr. Womens Division. Sarah finish third and Beth finished 6th. Sarah also surfed in the Open Women Division and took first. Karen Cochran finished 5th in the Women Masters Division.
Vince Pando, the most senior PPSC team rider, in his early 70s, finished 3rd in the Senior Legends Division. Ryan Devine, like Sarah Gerhardt, advanced to the finals in his division (Sr. Mens) and the Open Mens, finishing 5th in the Open and 4th in the Sr. Mens. Danny Cortazzo finished 3rd in the Masters Division. PPSC had 5 surfers surf in the Legends Division with Greg Cochran and Joel Baldwin making it to the finals. Greg finished 4th and Joel finished 5th.
PPSC finished 4th in the Paddle (relay) race. The talk of the town about the paddle race was when Michelle Simpson started paddling about 75 yards behind one of the best paddlers in Santa Cruz and passed him before the turn-around buoy. She finished well ahead of him which helped propel PPSC to the 4th place finish.
Other Pedro Point Surf Club members who participated in the weekend contest and were also responsible for the 3rd place finish were Dave Duncan, Pat Faughender, Matt Hertzberg, Asi Ghiassi, Heart, Krista Howell, Rick Loeper, Todd Smith, Izzy Szczepaniak and Dave Zarate.
