We’re happy to promote this new book about surfing and fitness from an author who started surfing at Pedro Point in 1963.

Surfing is one of the fastest growing recreational sports in the United States. More than 5 million men and women regularly pick up a surfboard and hit the waves. Surf Flex is the first book to address the fitness and conditioning requirements of this popular sport. Perhaps no other sport requires more agility and flexibility than surfing. Wiping out is no fun and a solid flexibility program will help prevent injuries, and keep you surfing longer and stronger. So before you hit the water, try the exercises in Surf Flex. It’s guaranteed to keep your Wednesdays big and your summers endless. Whether you are a beginning or advanced surfer, Surf Flex will get you in top form to ride the waves. With contributions by leading surfers from around the world, Surf Flex includes sections on: yoga-based pre- and post-surfing stretches, cardio and strength conditioning, balance and coordination training, swimming, injury prevention and more.

We know that surfing is more than just a hobby: it’s a lifestyle. No sport inspires greater passion and dedication in its enthu-siasts, from the greenest amateurs to the most daring pros. Now, Paul Frediani’s new book, Surf Flex, allows men and women who eat, sleep and breathe sun, sand and waves to structure their workout program around surfing as well!

When the U.S. Surf Team traveled to the Dominican Republic for the international Encuentro 2000 competition, they took Paul Frediani with them. That’s because Frediani is the mastermind behind the innovative Surf Flex training program, a workout specially designed to help surfers develop the core strength, endurance and balance they need to battle huge waves for hours on end.

Few sports provide a more thorough all-body workout than surfing. Surfers must have enormous upper body strength to paddle into position, great endurance to stay afloat all day, excellent flexibility and all-over strength to control the surfboard, and terrific lung capacity for those inevitable wipe-outs. But while surfing itself is great exercise, proper conditioning is neces-sary to prevent injury and allow surfers to get the most out of each and every wave.
