Waikiki Surfari in May – Good waves, great company
Night out at Hee Hing’s with original Waikiki beach boy, Donald Goo and family: Donald’s in red shirt center back of front table, Karen Cochran on his left and Debbie Walker, right. Around front table to Karen’s left are Brennan and Diane Duncan, Nora and Mike, Judy 2 and Bill, Cody (Ivan’s son) and Ivan of “Ivan’s Reef” in green. Starting with Greg Cochran in back, Carolyn behind Donald. Elton (Donald’s son) and wife Myava from Tahiti seated back of back table. GJ (Elton’s daughter’s boyfriend) and friend from Tahiti behind Elton. Rick Loeper and wife, Jannae, front of back table. Jeanine, Lisa Ryner’s friend, Lisa, and Adrian, Debbie’s work friend. Dave Duncan’s taking the photo.
Earlier in the week some of the group tried out Jimmy Buffet’s at the Beachcomber. From bottom right: Debbie Walker, Lisa Ryner, Brennan and Dave Duncan, Karen and Greg Cochran, Mike Snyder, Rich Dymer, son Derrick and girlfriend Shelby, Diane Duncan, old high school friend of Dave Duncan’s, Bob DaCosta, Adrian and Jeanine.
This is the perfect trip to shed those wind-chop-no-swell-50-degree-water- overcast-onshore-blues. About 12 club members with family and friends made the trip to Waikiki this May.
We found waves from waist to head high and 75 degree water. Surfing without a wetsuit in warm, clear water is something every surfer should experience – incredibly freeing. What’s great about Waikiki is you don’t need a car to get around – so many things to do and see within walking distance. Koa Surf Shop, only a block from the beach that is in front of “Canoes” and “Queens”, rents boards (long and short) and provides lockable racks for them when you’re not surfing. At less than $100/wk it’s half the price to rent and way more convenient than schlepping a board from the mainland. Groceries, pharmacies, restaurants, buses, the zoo, aquarium and shopping are all within a short walk.
Greg and Karen Cochran have been playing host to PPSCers for several years now on these Waikiki surfaris, which makes it fun for us mainlanders to visit and surf with ex-patriot PPSC Hawaii friends.
